Government Insurance Reduction Certificate

An Insurance Reduction Program has been implemented by Alberta Transportation in conjunction with the Alberta automobile insurance industry for new drivers who pass an approved course of driver training.  This program substantially reduces automobile insurance premiums for the first two years, as if the driver already had a blemish free two year driving record.

The program has two components:

1) Minimum of 15 hours of classroom instruction
Freedom to Drive's classroom program includes 15 hours of instruction based on the Alberta Transportation Class 5 driver training curriculum. The classroom course ends with another provincial multiple-choice test, which when passed, completes the first requirement for an insurance reduction certificate.

2) Minimum of 10 hours of in-car road training
The New Driver Package includes 10 hours of private instruction with a professional Freedom to Drive In-car instructor, usually done in two hours blocks of time. Simulator instruction is always completed first, effectively increasing the number of in-car hours to 12 or 13. Lessons are tailored according to your current skills and a variety of teaching methods are employed. To qualify for the second requirement of the certificate, the student must complete 10 hours of in-car and demonstrate 75% or better in all areas of the DRIVER education report.

After completing these two requirements the student is awarded in Alberta Insurance Reduction Certificate. This may be taken to the automobile insurance provider and you will receive the reduction in premiums.
