For Parents and Driving Coaches
Parents and Driving Coaches
Whether you are a parent, significant other, or good friend of the novice driver you have taken on a very serious commitment in assisting him or her to learn to drive. You should be commended for taking on this awesome responsibility.
Being a driving coach also gives you an opportunity to take a critical look at your own driving behavior, raise your own skill level and increase your personal safety awareness. You don’t want to pass on any bad driving habits that may have snuck in over the years!
As a mature driver you have one crucial thing that a novice driver does not have – Experience. Driving can be fun but it is also a very dangerous business. Experience allows you to instinctively know the right thing to do in a potentially hazardous situation, and by being a driving coach you are helping your novice driver develop these instincts.
Simulator Instruction and Driving Lessons teach the skills of manoeuvring and parking a vehicle, and studying the Driver’s Handbook develops knowledge of rules of the road, how a vehicle operates, and practical tips for driving safely and responsibly. But the synthesis of these skills and knowledge only occurs with practice, and this is where you, the driving coach, play an important role.
It is estimated that an average of 50-60 hours of lessons and practice is required in order learn to drive. The recommended package for new drivers has only 14 hours of in-car lessons, leaving 40 plus hours of practice for the driving coach. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Together you and driving partner must plan when these practice sessions are to occur.
Driving Coach Class
This is a special class for parents or driving coaches to attend with the student driver to help them get the most out of the critical in-car sessions. This class also helps bring coaches up to date with new developments in driving and provides tips on how to be the best driving coach possible
GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing) came into existence in May of 2003. If you earned your class 5 after that date it must be classified as advanced or non-probationary in order to serve as a driving coach.
