Starting in February 2010, Freedom to Drive will be offering the nationally recognized Defensive Driving Course developed by the Canada Safety Council. Students with a valid Alberta Drivers License who participate in the DDC program and pass the knowledge exam with 80% or better will qualify (once every 2 years) for a 3 point demerit reduction on their license.
This course is also offered to employers for their personnel who operate passenger size vehicles as part of their work tasks. Managers, fleet safety officers and administrators are encouraged to ensure that staff members who drive company vehicles, or drive personal vehicles on company business, complete a Defensive Driving Course at least every two years, as part of their due diligence in the promotion of corporate safety. FREEDOM TO DRIVE provides on site training as well as professional development courses that take advantage of the 12 foot screen and driving simulators located at the Blue Quill Driver Training Centre.
The key elements involved in the Defensive Driving Course are:
DEFENSIVE DRIVING PROGRAM for
DEMERIT REDUCTION and STAFF DEVELOPMENT
•Principles and Foundations of Defensive Driving
•The Driver (Dealing more with Attitude)
•Dealing with Intersections & Right of Way Regulations
•How Passing may Lead to Collisions and it's Psychology
•Aggressive Drivers and How to Avoid Being One
In addition students may choose one of the following supplemental Lessons:
•Fuel Efficiency and Pre-Trip Inspections
•Winter Driving
•Other Road Users, Collisions and First Aid
